Assessment Process
An ADHD assessment is a comprehensive, multi-step process that involves a thorough evaluation of an individual's symptoms, medical history, and developmental milestones. This process includes a detailed 90 minute interview with the individual, as well as a review of their medical records and educational history.
What to expect
Pre-Assessment Questionnaire
You will be asked to complete two questionnaires prior to the assessment. These relate to your own symptoms and also to a collateral history from a close family member / guardian who knew you well in childhood. If possible, we would request you also bring copies of school reports as these can be valuable in gaining an insight into possible symptoms as a child and teenager.
90 Minute Face-to-Face Interview
A full mental health and medical history is taken. A detailed evidence-based and validated ADHD questionnaire is undertaken.
Outcome and Next Steps
The next steps will depend on the outcome of these assessments. If appropriate and desired, medication can be commenced. This will require a brief physical examination concentrating on blood pressure and heart health. An ECG (recording of the heart) is not always necessary but may be in some cases prior to commencing medication.
Blood tests are not routinely required, but may be in a small minority of people. If medication has been prescribed, we would recommend two follow up appointments that are 4 weeks apart. These appointments are to assess progress on the medication, discuss any issues with side effects etc and to renew the ongoing prescription. They can be either online or by phone and will usually take about 15 minutes.
After the second follow up appointment, a full report will be issued to you and to your GP with advice about ongoing follow up. If desired, information and advice can be given around seeking psychological help in managing ADHD.
